Questions for Your Tao Mind

• Why might you be unwilling to accept forgiveness that is freely and openly available to you?

• What mountain are you trying to push a boulder up right now? Do you really need to?

A Tao Mind Exercise

• Locate a reasonably heavy rock—not so heavy that it will strain your back, but substantial enough for you to feel its weight when you carry it—twenty pounds or so. Any weighty object will do if you can’t find a rock, but I like the rock because of its natural symbolic qualities.

• Lay out a short path in your yard and place the stone at one end of the path.

• Stand by the stone for a few moments and let your breath be relaxed and full.

• Pick up the stone (be careful of your back—don’t make the stone that heavy).

• Walk slowly with the stone to the other end of the path and carefully lay it down.

• Stand for a few moments by the stone and watch the sensations and emotions that arise, then mindfully pick up the stone again and walk back to the start.

• Repeat until you have a sense of modest fatigue and an awareness of what the physical acts of “putting down” and “picking up” feel like in your body.

• I suggest this meditation as a practice when you feel burdened by a forgiveness issue. You might want to recite the meditation verse from this chapter as you lift, carry, and lay down the stone. The verse can also be used whenever you notice that you have, once again, picked up some thought habit that you might want to lay back down.
